The Art of Inner Balance
Moving from Reaction to Creation with Archetypes
Ever feel like you’re walking a tightrope, constantly shifting to keep from falling? One day you’re full of energy, taking on the world, and the next, you’re pulling back, seeking retreat. This fluctuation isn’t a sign of inconsistency; it’s the natural, dynamic dance of energies within you. The journey to a more harmonious life isn’t about achieving a perfect, static state of balance. Instead, it’s about learning to skillfully navigate the currents of your own inner world.
By understanding your archetypes (the hidden patterns that drive your thoughts, feelings, and actions) you can move from subconscious reaction to conscious creation, fostering a life that feels more balanced, authentic, and fulfilling.
Redefining Balance: It’s a Scale, Not a Switch
First, let’s release the idea that balance is an all-or-nothing state. It is not a fixed destination or a simple choice between “this or that.” Think of balance as a continuum or a scale. There are times you will feel more balanced and times you will feel less balanced. Our life journey is one of constant fluctuation, influenced by our internal thoughts and external circumstances.
Understanding where you are on this scale is not a value judgment. It is a powerful act of self-awareness, designed to help you see clearly where you are in your journey and what might be most helpful to find greater harmony.

Your Archetypal Blueprint
The Key to Understanding Your Triggers
So, what throws you off balance? The answer often lies in your archetypal patterns. Archetypes are universal patterns of energy that live within all of us, often operating just beneath the surface of our awareness. They are the foundational blueprints for how we experience the world.
At the core of every archetype is a dynamic relationship between two opposing but complementary forces:
Expanded and Contracted energies. These energies are neutral (not good or bad) and like day and night or an inhale and an exhale, both are essential for a whole and healthy life.
To feel balanced, we need to harmonize these two primary energies. We all have a natural tendency to lean more toward one expression. If you tend to express primarily expanded energies, learning to consciously incorporate contracted energies can restore you. If you are primarily contracted, inviting expansion can prevent you from becoming stuck or isolated.
The goal is not a perfect 50/50 split. The goal is to develop the awareness to know which energy to apply in any given moment to bring yourself into greater alignment.
Practical Steps to Cultivate Balance
Awareness is the first step, but conscious action creates change. Here are practical ways to find more balance, whether you lean toward expansion, contraction, or swing between the two.

If you are Primarily Expanded
(Prone to over-giving, burnout, and restlessness):

If you are Primarily Contracted
(Prone to withdrawal, isolation, and fear of exposure)

If you Swing Between Energies
(Prone to cycles of burnout and withdrawal)

Resources
(Money, Talents, Energy)
Unbalanced Expression:
You might overgive your time and talents for free (expanded) or hoard resources and refuse to invest in yourself (contracted).
Balanced Expression:
Practice valuing your own gifts by asking for fair compensation, creating a healthy cycle of giving and receiving. Understand that being well-resourced allows you to serve more effectively and sustainably.

Relationships
(Friends, Family, Romantic)
Unbalanced Expression:
You may become the caretaker in all relationships (expanded) or withdraw emotionally, refusing to ask for support (contracted).
Balanced Expression:
Cultivate relationships based on mutual support. Practice giving generously while also being able to ask for and receive care, creating strong, interdependent bonds.

Ego & Identity
(Sense of Self, Purpose, Personal Story)
Unbalanced Expression:
You might fuse your identity with your role, feeling worthless if you aren't serving (expanded), or reject your helpful nature to adopt a persona that feels inauthentic (contracted)
Balanced Expression:
Ground your worth in your inner character (loyalty, integrity, compassion) not your external function. Know that your value is inherent and does not disappear when you are at rest.

Community
(Belonging, Social Circles, Collective Roles)
Unbalanced Expression:
You may take on the majority of volunteer work, leading to burnout (expanded), or step away from the community altogether out of disillusionment (contracted).
Balanced Expression:
Contribute to your community from a place of passion and genuine capacity. Inspire others to step up by modeling healthy service and empowering the group to thrive collectively.

Self-Expression
(Creativity, Voice, Authenticity)
Unbalanced Expression:
You might silence your own opinions to be more accommodating (contracted) or only express yourself in ways you believe will serve others' needs (expanded)
Balanced Expression:
Express your truth with kindness and humility, understanding that your authentic perspective is a valuable contribution.

Spirituality
(Meaning, Belief Systems, Connection to the Divine)
Unbalanced Expression:
You could view self-sacrifice as the highest spiritual calling, justifying self-neglect (expanded), or become cynical and feel abandoned by a higher power after a period of burnout (contracted).
Balanced Expression:
See service as a sacred practice that must be sustainable. Understand that honoring the self is also a divine responsibility, allowing you to be a clearer channel for good in the world.
Your Path to a Balanced Life
Finding balance is a journey of self-remembering. It unfolds in three key stages: Awareness, Acceptance, and Action.
Awareness See the Blueprint
The first step is to identify your primary archetypes. These are the foundational energies that have been woven throughout your life story, shaping your choices, relationships, and challenges. Think back across your life: Which behaviors, drives, or inner voices have shown up again and again? Identifying these core patterns provides stunning clarity on what truly drives your thoughts, feelings, and actions. This awareness is the map you need to navigate your inner world.
Acceptance Embrace Your Full Self
Recognize that every archetype has a full spectrum of expression, from the more balanced to the less balanced. The key is to accept all of these parts without judgment. Sometimes the archetypes that stir the most discomfort in us are the ones we carry most deeply. Instead of criticizing these patterns, approach them with compassion and curiosity. This transforms self-judgment into the deep self-compassion necessary for true growth.
Action Create a New Reality
With the clarity of awareness and the foundation of acceptance, you can now take inspired action. This is where you consciously choose your responses rather than reacting from old patterns. If you recognize you are leading with primarily expanded energy and are feeling burnt out, you can intentionally schedule time for rest and receptivity. If you are stuck in contracted energy, you might take one small, intentional step outward to reconnect with your purpose. By applying these practical tools, you learn to consciously balance your archetypal energies, creating a new reality that is more aligned, sustainable, and deeply fulfilling.
